UKRAINIAN DRONE STRIKES IGNITE RUSSIAN OIL DEPOT IN SOCHI

August 3, 2025

A fire erupted at an oil storage facility near the Russian city of Sochi following an alleged Ukrainian drone strike, according to local authorities. The blaze, which engulfed a fuel tank, was eventually contained after a large-scale firefighting operation involving over 120 personnel.

Officials in the Krasnodar region confirmed that the incident temporarily disrupted flights at Sochi’s airport, a key hub that once hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Russian forces escalated attacks in southern Ukraine, targeting critical infrastructure in Kherson and injuring civilians in Mykolaiv.

The strike on the Sochi depot was reportedly part of a broader Ukrainian offensive against Russian energy facilities over the weekend. Similar attacks were reported in Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh, with officials claiming four injuries in one of the incidents. Kyiv has not officially acknowledged the operations but has previously justified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure as retaliation for Moscow’s ongoing bombardment of Ukraine’s power grid.

Russian defense officials claimed to have intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Ukraine’s air force reported downing 61 out of 83 Russian drones and missiles launched in return.

In Kherson, repeated shelling has severely damaged the Ostrivsky bridge, a vital link for residents of Korabel Island. Regional authorities have urged partial evacuations as the structure nears collapse. The latest strikes follow a deadly week for Ukrainian civilians, including a large-scale assault on Kyiv that killed at least 31 people.

As tensions escalate, Ukrainian leaders continue pressing for stronger international sanctions against Russia, while Moscow remains defiant amid global condemnation. The conflict shows no signs of de-escalation, with both sides intensifying attacks on strategic and civilian targets.
