A fatal incident occurred at a prominent zoo in Jerusalem when a leopard escaped its enclosure and attacked a staff member during a routine activity. The victim, identified as Uriel Nuri, 36, succumbed to severe injuries despite emergency medical efforts.
Nuri, who led the carnivore care team, was preparing an enrichment exercise for the leopards as part of a behind-the-scenes tour when the animal broke free. Authorities confirmed that visitors were unharmed, shielded by protective barriers during the incident.
Emergency responders transported Nuri to a nearby hospital, where medical teams attempted lifesaving measures before pronouncing him dead. The zoo has temporarily closed its doors as officials collaborate with law enforcement to determine how the breach occurred.
The facility, known for its collection of biblical and endangered species, expressed profound grief over the loss. “Our hearts are with Uriel’s loved ones during this devastating time,” a statement read.
This marks the second serious animal-related incident at the zoo in recent years, following a crocodile attack in 2024 that left another employee hospitalized. Investigations into the latest tragedy are ongoing.
