Three individuals have been taken into custody after a chaotic street fight in Cincinnati, Ohio, gained widespread attention online. The altercation, captured in multiple videos, led to felony charges against those involved.
Authorities identified the suspects as Montianez Merriweather, 34; Dekyra Vernon, 24; and Jermaine Matthews, 39. Merriweather and Vernon face additional felonious assault charges, which carry potential prison sentences of up to eight years. Matthews has been charged with assault and aggravated riot.
The brawl erupted in the early hours of Saturday morning in a busy downtown area. Police reported that despite the large crowd present, only one person called for help. Investigators noted that alcohol likely contributed to the escalation of violence.
Footage of the incident circulated rapidly on social media, sparking heated debates about race and media coverage. Some online commentators suggested racial motivations, though others disputed these claims, pointing out that several individuals—including Black bystanders—attempted to intervene and stop the violence.
Local officials condemned the attack, with one mayoral candidate calling it a “wake-up call” for the city. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials criticized the judicial system after learning that one of the suspects, Merriweather, had been released on bond weeks earlier for unrelated weapons charges.
The FBI has reportedly opened its own investigation into the incident. As of now, the exact cause of the altercation remains unclear.
Bail for the three suspects has been set at $500,000 for Merriweather, $200,000 for Vernon, and $100,000 for Matthews. Their legal representation has not yet been confirmed.
The case continues to draw scrutiny as authorities work to determine whether additional charges or arrests will follow.
