Plans are underway to establish two new surgical facilities in the northwest of Ireland, including one in Letterkenny, following calls from local medical professionals. The move aims to enhance cancer care and reduce waiting times for elective surgeries in the region.
Authorities confirmed that Letterkenny University Hospital will see the development of a surgical hub alongside expanded oncology services, while a separate facility with two operating theaters will be built near Sligo University Hospital. The decision comes after initial proposals favored Sligo alone, sparking concerns from Donegal clinicians who pushed for inclusion.
Government officials emphasized that the expansion is data-driven, not politically influenced, and aligns with national healthcare strategies. The hubs are expected to be operational within two years, offering faster access to procedures for patients in the area.
However, challenges remain, particularly in staffing the new units. Health executives acknowledged the difficulty of recruiting personnel but stressed the long-term benefits, including reduced travel for chemotherapy patients in Donegal.
The investment marks a significant step in addressing regional healthcare disparities, with officials calling it a milestone for improved patient care in the northwest.
