NEW GARDA COMMISSIONER APPOINTED IN IRELAND

July 29, 2025

Justin Kelly has been named as the next leader of Ireland’s national police force, An Garda Síochána, following an extensive selection process. His five-year term will begin in September, succeeding outgoing Commissioner Drew Harris.

The appointment was confirmed by the Minister for Justice, who emphasized the rigorous evaluation involved in choosing the right candidate. A global search narrowed the field to 14 finalists, with Kelly ultimately selected after interviews, assessments, and a formal presentation.

Kelly, currently serving as Deputy Commissioner for Security, Strategy, and Governance, brings a strong background in law enforcement, including expertise in combating organized crime and enhancing national security. His leadership has been recognized internationally, with past collaborations strengthening ties between agencies.

Harris, who steps down after seven years as commissioner and over four decades in policing, praised his successor’s credentials. Despite facing challenges during his tenure, including a no-confidence vote in 2023, Harris maintained his position and oversaw key reforms.

Government officials, including the Taoiseach and Tánaiste, expressed confidence in Kelly’s ability to lead the force. They also acknowledged Harris’s contributions, particularly his role in modernizing the Gardaí during a period of significant change.

As Kelly prepares to take office, the focus remains on strengthening community safety and continuing the force’s evolution. His appointment marks a new chapter for Irish policing, with expectations high for his leadership in addressing crime and public security.
