KYIV MOURNS AS RUSSIAN STRIKES CLAIM 31 LIVES, ZELENSKY URGES HARSHER SANCTIONS

August 1, 2025

The Ukrainian capital observed a somber day of mourning following a devastating Russian assault that left at least 31 dead, including five children, the youngest just two years old. Over 150 others were wounded as missiles and drones struck residential areas, collapsing an apartment block and damaging critical infrastructure, including a hospital and educational facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed calls for intensified global sanctions against Moscow, dismissing Kremlin claims that such measures are ineffective. “Sanctions do work—they must be tightened,” he insisted, emphasizing the need for unified international pressure.

The attack, one of the deadliest since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, involved over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, according to Ukrainian air defenses. Meanwhile, discussions in Washington hinted at potential new sanctions targeting Russian energy exports, with Ukrainian officials reporting “positive signals” from U.S. leaders.

Amid escalating violence, diplomatic efforts continue. A senior U.S. official urged both sides to negotiate an immediate ceasefire, while Germany pledged additional air defense systems to bolster Ukraine’s protection.

As the conflict grinds on, Zelensky stressed the urgency of collective action: “Every day counts. Only unified pressure—from America, Europe, and the world—can halt this aggression.”
