Erik Menendez, one of the infamous Menendez brothers serving time for the 1989 murders of their parents, has been hospitalized due to a significant but undisclosed medical issue, according to his attorney. The development comes just weeks before he and his brother, Lyle, face a crucial parole hearing that could determine their potential release after 35 years behind bars.
While officials have not confirmed specifics, reports suggest Erik is being treated for a kidney-related condition. He was transferred from a San Diego prison to an outside medical facility, with corrections officials describing his status as “fair.”
The brothers, now 54 and 57, were originally sentenced to life without parole but were resentenced earlier this year to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole consideration due to their young age at the time of the crimes. A Los Angeles judge ruled that the pair no longer posed an “unreasonable risk” to society, citing their conduct in prison.
Their attorney, Mark Geragos, has urged authorities to grant Erik a medical furlough ahead of the August 21 hearing, arguing it would allow him to properly prepare for the proceedings. “It’s the only fair and equitable solution,” Geragos stated.
The Menendez brothers, convicted after two high-profile trials in the 1990s, have long maintained they acted in self-defense, though prosecutors argued the killings were financially motivated. Their case, which captivated the public and inspired numerous media portrayals, now hinges on the upcoming parole decision.
